FAQs

How much will the conversion cost me?

A conversion starts from around £1,300 for a four cylinder engine.

Will I save money by converting to LPG?

Savings of up to 45% can be achieved on your current fuel costs with petrol and over 20% compared to the equivalent diesel. Due to its low fuel duty, LPG retails at about half the price of unleaded petrol and diesel.

Under the current financial climate investing money in a LPG conversion would give you a return of up to 8%, with current banks offering less than 2%.

What are the environmental benefits of LPG?

Vehicles running on LPG emit up to 20% less harmful CO2 emissions, reducing your carbon footprint. Do your bit for the environment and save money!

What happens if I run out of LPG?

This is not a problem; the petrol system stays exactly the same allowing you to run either on petrol or LPG. Most modern LPG systems will automatically switch to gas (the cheaper fuel) and will automatically switch back to petrol when the LPG has run out.

Will I lose boot space?

Gas tanks are available in a vast array of sizes. Loss of boot space can be kept to a minimum by using a doughnut-shaped tank fitted into the spare wheel well.

How long does it take?

Conversions take between 3 to 4 days to be completed; courtesy cars are available on request.

Where can I fill up with LPG?

There are more than 1,400 LPG refueling stations in the UK including Shell, BP and many supermarket outlets.

Is there an LPG fuel gauge?

Most LPG systems have the gauge incorporated within the small gas switch; this is located on the dashboard. Normally a series of four LED lights indicate a full tank of gas decreasing as the gas is used.

Can I over-fill the tank?

No, because the LPG tank is fitted with an automatic shut-off valve.

Will the vehicles performance be affected if I convert to LPG?

The calorific value of LPG is slightly less than that of petrol; however the amount of power lost is minimal and would be unlikely to be noticed.

How safe is LPG?

LPG is renowned for its excellent safety record; gas tanks are made of a heavy gauge steel and are a lot stronger than conventional petrol tanks which are mainly made of plastic.

What happens if an LPG vehicle is involved in an accident?

The tank and gas pipes are fitted with numerous safety devices. The gas flow will automatically be shut off by electronic valves if the pipes are damaged or the engine is not running. If the vehicle catches fire, the gas tank pressure is controlled via a pressure relief valve allowing the gas to be released in a

controlled way.

DON’T FORGET TO INFORM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY THAT YOUR VEHICLE HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO LPG.

Will the conversion affect the resale value of my car?

A healthy used-car market depends on public interest. A quality LPG system fitted by an approved installer is a good selling point and may increase the resale value of your car. In 2008 British Car Auctions reported that LPG vehicles were obtaining 115% of book value.

Can I buy LPG abroad?

LPG is widely available in most European countries. For links to the major European websites providing the location of fuel sites abroad click here.

Is LPG here to stay?

LPG is currently the most viable option as an alternative vehicle fuel in the UK. The LPG industry, together with the Government and drivers using LPG, has invested around £1/4 billion in creating a healthy market for vehicle LPG. The industry has a total annual turnover in excess of £500 million and employs around 15,000 people. In June 2003, the 100,000th LPG car took to the road. Globally,

there are now more than 12 million vehicles powered by LPG.
